Sleet snow possible as arctic front moves through Big Country

Drive with care and anticipated deteriorating travel conditions early this morning.

The NWS Cleveland office in an online message said rain will change to freezing rain, sleet and then snow today as an "arctic cold front" moves across the area. Heavy snow and mixed precipitation is possible Friday night and Saturday, with accumulations of six to 12 inches, along with ice.

On Thursday temperatures are expected to begin to warm some, with highs reaching the 40s and 50s across the state. Temperatures could drop below freezing from west to east during the day on Friday and be in the teens by early Saturday morning. Motorists should be prepared for slippery roads and limited visibility and use caution. Temperatures were expected to fall to around 24 degrees by 5 p.m. High near 44. North wind 9 to 14 miles per hour. Winds could gust as high as 36 miles per hour. The chance of precipitation will be 60 percent. Due to rainfall and melting snow, there is a Flood Watch in effect for much of New England starting at 6 a.m. and ending Saturday afternoon.

The weather forecaster estimates an 82 percent chance of snow, according to a forecast provided through The Associated Press. Wind chill values could be as low as minus 15 degrees from northwesterly, then southeasterly winds in the afternoon.

Lows Monday night will be in the low-to-mid 20s with partly cloudy skies. Single digit wind chills are likely. North northwest wind 5 to 8 miles per hour. There will be some lingering snow showers on Thursday.

Tonight: Showers likely, mainly after 4 a.m. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 13.

There will be two chances for snow, the second one being more substantial than the first.

Tuesday Night: Clear, with a low around 17. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 7.

The high Thursday is expected to be around 32.
