Yemen's Houthis fire ballistic missile at Saudi military airport

Saudi Arabia intercepts ballistic missile

On Wednesday, a coalition spokesman announced that a total of 87 missiles had been launched into Saudi territory from Yemen since the conflict in that country began more than three years ago.

Saudi state news agency said the missile was intercepted and destroyed, causing no casualties.

The series of air raids comes one day after the Houthis reportedly launched a "ballistic missile" at a military installation in Saudi Arabia's southern city of Najran near the Saudi-Yemeni border.

The Red Sea is a key shipping route for world trade that connects the Middle East to Europe via the Suez Canal.

Last Friday, the Air Defense Forces of the Arab Coalition had intercepted a ballistic missile fired by the Houthi militias over the skies of Najran.

"In a blatant violation of global law, the Iranian-Houthi militia on Saturday attempted an attack by three remote-controlled drone boats, targeting a Saudi oil tanker and threatening to disrupt navigation in Bab El-Mandeb strait", Colonel Turki Al-Maliki.

The Shiite Huthi rebels control the main port of Hodeida among a string of Red Sea ports on Yemen's western coast that are vital entry points for food imports and aid.

Al Maliki said the Houthi terrorist group is training its personnel to attack ships, destroyers and aircraft carriers, and to target maritime traffic.

Yemen, one of the Arab world's poorest countries, is embroiled in a proxy war between the Houthis, who are allied with Iran, and a US -backed military coalition headed by Saudi Arabia.

More than 8,750 people have died in the war and the country is facing what the United Nations has described as the world's worst humanitarian crisis.
