Possible hoax alert: Canadian schoolgirl claims man tried to 'cut off her hijab'

Khawlah Noman speaks to reporters with her mother at her school after she told police that a man cut her hijab with scissors in Toronto Ontario Canada Jan. 12 2018

"I want her and her family and her friends and community to know that that is not what Canada is". "It's not right and he should get help", says Saima Sanad.

"This does not represent who we are, " Wynne wrote in a tweet.

An assailant, in two attempts within 10 minutes, cut Khawlah Noman's hijab using scissors while she was walking to school with her brother, a Toronto police spokesperson said. "I'm a kid", the girl said to her attacker.

Police were called shortly afterward.

Her mother told reporters she is angry someone would target a child, calling on police to treat the incident as a hate crime.

A rise in Islamophobic incidents across the U.S., Canada, and Western Europe has been widely attributed to hateful rhetoric against Muslims by US President Donald Trump, as well as by other politicians following the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks in the U.S. Fifteen out of the 19 terrorists involved in the 9/11 attacks were Saudi Arabian nationals.

Sidhu called the girl's actions "brave and smart".

The courageous girl had a message for her attacker and said: 'What you're doing is very wrong, you should stop doing this.

The Toronto Disctrict School Board says school administrators contacted police and the girl's family as soon as they learned of the attack.

The school has brought in social workers for the children to speak with, if they wish to do so.

The suspect has been described by police as Asian and appearing to be in his 20s, standing between five-foot-eight and six-foot, with a medium build, black hair, mustache and eye glasses. He was said to be about 20, almost six feet tall and with a medium build. He was wearing black prescription glasses, a black hooded sweater, black trousers and brown gloves, police said.

Toronto Mayor John Tory said he was "shocked and appalled" by the incident.

"This is a cowardly act of hatred. Intolerance and hate of any kind, including islamophobia, has no place in our city, our province, or our country".

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau condemned the attack, along with other Canadian politicians.

When asked what she would say to the suspect, Noman added: "What you're doing is way wrong".
