South Africa v/s India: Dale Steyn ruled out of remainder of Test series

South African bowler Dale Steyn celebrates the wicket of Indian batsman Shikhar Dhawan on the first day of the first test between South Africa and India at Newlands Stadium in Cape Town South Africa Friday Jan. 5 2018

Steyn's wickets helped South Africa dismiss India for 209 in their reply to the hosts' 286 at Newlands.

Steyn was in full flow during his second spell, snaring the wicket of Wriddhiman Saha by catching him leg before.

A day after making a successful (and long-awaited) comeback to the South African side, Steyn limped off the field having injured his heel during India's first innings of the ongoing Cape Town Test.

"In his delivery stride in his 18th over, Steyn landed awkwardly on his landing foot and this caused significant tissue damage in the heel area of his foot".

With South Africa now leading by 142 runs with eight wickets still remaining, it is unlikely that Steyn will be required to bat - although Moosajee said that call could only be made once he sees the specialist. Steyn was immediately taken for scans, which revealed the extent of the damage. It was just before tea when Steyn pulled out from his run up and left the field.

South Africa have picked up four fast bowlers including Dale Steyn and a spinner Keshav Maharaj. He couldn't complete his 18th over and was limping slightly as he headed to the dressing rooms at Newlands.

"I feel my rhythm is quite good at the moment, but I'm not hitting my straps fully just yet".

He returned to play against New Zealand at home and then toured Australia, where he broke a bone in his shoulder on the second day of the Perth Test. Before that, the 34-year-old paceman, regarded as one of the game's great fast bowlers, endured other problems with his right shoulder and a groin injury.

His comeback was closely watched with fears that he hadn't played enough cricket in the buildup to this season and might struggle for match fitness.

"What is important to note is that this injury was freakish because of how his foot landed and is no way related to his bowling loads or not being match ready". With the wicket, he reached 419 Test wickets, just two wickets behind Shaun Pollock's record count of 421 career Test victims.
