St Petersburg supermarket blast: Russian authorities detain man who organised and executed bombing

St Petersburg supermarket blast suspect detained - FSB

Anna Mityanina, vice governor of Saint Petersburg, which is Russia's second city, said on Twitter on Wednesday that of the 13 wounded eight remained in hospital care.

Petrenko said that the man had given testimony that confirmed that he was the organizer of the explosion.

Putin said the FSB security service had recently prevented "another attempted terrorist act". It was carried out by a Russian citizen born in Kyrgyzstan.

The extremist group Islamic State (IS) had claimed responsibility for the bombing through its Amaq news agency on December 29. The FSB normally deals with terror suspects itself, and the transfer could indicate that the man had other motives.

"I yesterday ordered the FSB director to act within the framework of the law when detaining these bandits of course, but if there is a threat to the life and well-being of our employees ...to act decisively, not take any prisoners, and liquidate the bandits on the spot".

Putin emphasized that Russia's two-year military campaign in Syria helped avert more terror attacks by eliminating militants who threatened Russian Federation.

Russian president Vladimir Putin puts flowers down outside Tekhnologicheskiy Institut metro station in St. Petersburg, Russia, last April after a blast that injured 13 in a supermarket.

Russia's military intervened in Syria in September 2015 to shore up the regime of President Bashar al-Assad and combat jihadists, making Russian Federation a major target for such groups.

Mr Putin thanked President Trump for help from the Central Intelligence Agency in identifying the suspects.

The Federal Security Service said seven IS-linked suspects were arrested in connection to the alleged plot.

Investigators said the suspect had also hidden two USB drives near the site of the blast containing information about his actions and photographs of the explosive device.
