The scientist tested aspirin, Tylenol and ibuprofen.

The study, published this week in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS), monitored 31 healthy white men aged 18 to 35.

The study shows that it has a negative impact on the testicles of young men, altering their sex hormone production and affecting their reproductive health.

'In the men, luteinizing hormone (LH) and ibuprofen plasma levels were positively correlated, and the testosterone/LH ratio decreased.

There are new concerns that men who take a lot of Ibuprofen could face fertility problems. To compensate, the pituitary gland stimulates production of more testosterone - but eventually, the mechanism wears out and levels of the hormone drop throughout the body.

Previous research by the team, which focused on pregnant women, had found that the use of Paracetamol and Ibuprofen during pregnancy affected the testicles of male babies. Of course, there is a bright side to this new finding, and that is to limit your intake of ibuprofen.

Erma Z. Drobnis, a University of Missouri, Columbia, professor who specializes in fertility, says this study is important, given how common ibuprofen is, even with such a small sample size.

However, in recent years, ibuprofen in particular has been linked to an increased risk of heart attacks and strokes, meaning we should be more cautious when taking anti-inflammatory drugs. In the group, the men who took 600 mg of Ibuprofen (the equivalent of three tablets) twice a day developed a condition called compensated hypogonadism. This rose to a 23% decrease after 44 days. Long term, it can lead to a more serious condition called overt primary hypogonadism, which is characterized by low testosterone and libido, depressed mood and reduced muscle mass and strength. Inhibition of testosterone levels was found to be significant and dose-dependent after 24 and 48 hours of ibuprofen exposure (in doses which corresponded to the oral doses used in the trial).

A study of nearly 1,000 men tracked for seven years found that twice as many with hypogonadism died as did those with normal testosterone levels.

The study also investigated several other hormones produced by the testes that were found to be reduced by ibuprofen. But researchers are concerned about long-term use among athletes.
