Serena Williams pulled out of the chance to defend the Australian Open she won last year

The piece details Williams' recovery from her emergency C-section, and complications caused by her previous struggles with blood clots: feeling short of breath, and recognising the potential impact of skipping her usual anticoagulants due to the surgery, Williams advised hospital staff she needed a CT scan, ASAP. Furthermore, Serena's fresh C-section wound had popped open from her coughing fits caused by the pulmonary embolism, and when she returned to surgery, doctors discovered a large hematoma had flooded her abdomen - caused by the lifesaving blood-thinning medication she was taking for her blood clots. She told the nurse her medical history, and suggested a CT scan ASAP. She recalls telling medics: 'A Doppler? They finally did the CT, and sure enough, there were several blood clots in her lungs.

"That was an incredible feeling", she said. However, with Williams recovering on bed rest for six weeks, she and Ohanian found this transition into parenthood to be understandably hard.

Serena Williams has spoken about the medical ordeal she faced after giving birth to her daughter.

Williams was supposed to give a shot at defending her title at the Australian Open later this month but pulled out on Friday, saying she was "super close" but still not at the level she needs to be.

In an Instagram post on Wednesday, Williams said the cover had "brought tears to [her] eyes" and was a "moment [she] will never forget".

Her husband, Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian, 34, said: 'On top of everything she was going through, the feeling of not being able to help made it even harder.

Given that there is a finite number of punters, if one store increases sales it is generally because it is taking shoppers from elsewhere.

Williams is on the mend and played in her first match since giving birth December 30.

"I've broken down I don't know how many times".

"The memory of last year's Open is one that I will carry with me, and Olympia and I look forward to coming back again". I don't play to be the second best or the third best. "Or I'll get angry about the crying, then sad about being angry, and then guilty, like, 'Why do I feel so sad when I have a attractive baby?' The emotions are insane".

But that's not to be confused with the idea that Serena is anxious about reclaiming her spot as number one when she returns.

"After competing in Abu Dhabi I realised that although I am super close, I'm not where I personally want to be", she said in a statement on Snapchat.

Williams was put on blood thinners, but she wasn't out of the woods yet.
