But many have already pledged to boycott the store, as The Weekend - a Canadian R'n'B star who produced menswear collections with the chain - said he was cutting ties with the company.

H&M hasn't had the best experience in Africa in the two years since its first store opened on the continent.

The Swedish brand received serious flak for this, following which the company released a statement, "We sincerely apologize for offending people with this image".

Despite rumours on social media, at no point was the mall shut down, and at no point did their march turn violent.

They went around stores at shopping centres in Cape Town and Pretoria.

H&M was widely derided this week for putting a black child model in its "Coolest Monkey in the Jungle" hoodie on its website.

One person reported seeing EFF supporters looting the store before police arrived, evacuated the store and closed it, with some protesters still inside.

An H&M store in South Africa was trashed by protesters of that now-viral racist photo, Reuters reports.

"At the East Rand Mall the protesters managed to enter the shop and stole several items". Some held signs that said "H&M say "hello" to coolest monkeys" and "away with H&M racist tendencies".

No arrests have been made so far but police are now investigating a case of malicious damage to property.

H&M in South Africa says it had removed the sweatshirt from sale.

The H&M advert has sparked outcry.

On Twitter Saturday morning, Malema wrote: "We will never be told by any fool on how to fight against our oppression particularly those who have never been at the picket lines".

"Our position is simple, we have got this wrong and we are deeply sorry", the apology read.

H&M said in an email Wednesday that "we completely understand and agree with the reactions by The Weeknd, G-Eazy and others".
