US: New York bomb attack suspect indicted on 6 counts

Ullah showed up in court in person for the first time Thursday, having previously only appeared before a judge by video from a hospital bed after his arrest.

Akayed Ullah, a 27-year-old Bangladeshi man, faces a litany of charges in the December 11 bombing in an underground walkway connecting two subway lines beneath the Port Authority Bus terminal.

Akayed Ullah, 27, now faces charges including one count of seeking to provide material support to a terrorist organization, namely Daesh, and one count of using and attempting to use a weapon of mass destruction.

Addressing reporters today, Ullah's attorney Amy Gallicchio emphasized the importance of due process.

When Manhattan Federal Judge Richard Sullivan asked Ullah his plea, Ullah replied, "At this moment, not guilty".

She said Ullah recently had some stitches removed but had others that were still causing him a "great deal of discomfort". He seemed to walk gingerly to his seat before the hearing began.

In addition to surveillance video that allegedly captures Ullah detonating the makeshift explosive, the government says a search of Ullah's apartment turned up crude bomb-making materials including screws, pieces of metal pipes and Christmas tree lights.

Provoking fleeting panic on December 11, 2017, the attack caused no physical injuries except for Ullah, whom authorities rushed to Bellevue Hospital where doctors stitched him up and dressed his wounds.

The indictment was announced by the US Attorney's Office for the Southern District of NY.

Ullah has been in the United States since 2011 as a result of chain migration, authorities said.

Authorities said he taunted President Donald Trump on Facebook before the attack writing, "Trump you failed to protect your nation". He has not yet set a trial date. The Republican president later demanded tightened immigration rules. "Ullah's alleged plot failed", U.S. Attorney Geoffrey S. Berman of the Southern District of NY said in a statement, referring to the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria, or Daesh.
