Officials report 7 more flu deaths in NC; 20 for the season

Nine care facilities in B.C.'s Interior are dealing with influenza outbreaks that have left four people dead.

The season officially began October 1 and lasts through March 31, although some seasons begin early and can linger into May.

"[They are] considered to be directly attributed to the outbreak", said Dr. Karin Goodison, medical health officer with Interior Health.

"It is not unusual to have deaths related to influenza".

"We've done so much testing [over] the last week and have been surprised to see that H3N2 is the predominant strain", she said, explaining that the subtype has historically caused more severe illness and death.

The NC Department of Health and Human Services announced Thursday that there have been seven more flu deaths, including a child.

The surge in flu cases created longer waiting times at hospitals and heavier workloads for paramedics in California. In addition, we enforce our policy of only two visitors per patient at one time.

People who get a flu vaccine may still get sick, but the vaccine may help minimize the symptoms, and may also help people overcome the flu more quickly, Pacheco said.

"You have to remember how this data is collected", he said.

In the case of an outbreak, Roberts said the facilities have flu protocols to follow. The eighth patient was a 69-year-old resident of Dallas.

There's been a significant increase in flu cases in both San Luis Obispo and Santa Barbara Counties.

"Patients experiencing flu symptoms should see a health provider, including primary care or urgent care, as soon as possible, because there is a prescription medicine that can reduce the duration and symptoms".

While the flu is often a short-term inconvenience for healthy people, it can be deadly for those who are elderly or ill.

The most important thing to remember for local residents, particularly if you are in a high-risk group such as aging adults or pregnant women, is that it's not too late to get a flu shot, health officials stressed.

Experts said flu season in Southwest Florida ends around April.
