Hawaii ‘ballistic missile threat’ alert to phones was false alarm

Hawaii ‘ballistic missile threat’ alert to phones was false alarm

The message was sent amid heightened nuclear tensions between the United States and North Korea.

CNN reported Hawaiian Governor David Ige told reporters the mistake was the result of human error and someone at the state emergency management agency pushed the "wrong button" during a shift change. "We spent the last few months trying to get ahead of this threat and provide enough preparation time for the public".

"We made a mistake", he acknowledged in a press conference. "It was no different, because we believed it was happening".

"The governor has directed that we hold off any more tests until we get this squared away".

Hawaii Rep. Tulsi Gabbard was among the first to confirm on Twitter that the alert was mistakenly sent out, and there was no threat of a missile.

US defence agencies, the Pentagon and the US Pacific Command issued the same statement, that they had "detected no ballistic missile threat to Hawaii".

She questioned why it took civil defense so long to send out the all-clear and why they tweeted before sending a mobile push alert.

Parts of Hawaii woke up Saturday to an emergency alert: "BALLISTIC MISSILE THREAT INBOUND TO HAWAII. State of Hawaii will send out a correction message as soon as possible". U.S. Sen. Brian Schatz of Hawaii called for the alert system to be suspended until "we can be 100 percent confident in its reliability".

"I am sorry for the pain and confusion it caused", he said. "The panic and fear created by this false alarm was risky and irresponsible".

White House spokeswoman Lindsay Walters says it "was purely a state exercise".

"Traveling the world as an extreme adventurer, I've been in very scary situations from snowstorms to sharks to hot lava. It wasn't panic. It's not like you can see it coming and dodge it".

But despite the widespread panic, a number of Japanese tourists and residents of the island state interviewed by The Japan Times voiced a more composed reaction to the false alarm. They told FOX 13 News about those frantic moments. Turner says she quickly and calmly gathered her two young kids sheltered inside the only room of her home without windows, the downstairs bathroom. He said they were "absolutely terrified" and wanted to come home immediately.

Wu Qing, a Chinese scholar working in Hawaii, told Xinhua in a phone interview that she still felt frightened. They soon learned that there were no bomb shelters in their area but were heartened to recall seeing a US military installation while on a hike in a nearby canyon.

As he and his wife discussed their options, he got another smartphone alert reading, "There is no missile threat or danger to the State of Hawaii".

Trump - who in the past has deployed bombastic rhetoric at North Korea and its leader Kim Jong-Un - had yet to react to the false warning. "There is nothing we can do with a missile, '" said Sterling, a law firm employee.

Speaking after the third round, which started on time at Waialae Country Club, Thomas said he had not got the original warning and was only aware after he received a screen shot from fellow pro Tom Lovelady. "Gone. That's what they just went through".
