Jay Bruce is heading back to New York after signing a free agent deal with the Mets

According to Ken Rosenthal, the Mets will backload the deal and will only have to pay him $10 million this year with increases coming his last two seasons in NY.

Bruce, who turns 31 on April 3, fills a hole in the outfield and brings back some much-needed power to a Mets team trying to rebound from an injury-ravaged 70-92 season.

Bruce hit.248 with seven home runs and 26 RBIs for the Indians, giving him season totals of 36 home runs and 101 RBIs.

NY was one of at least four teams interested in Bruce.

When Bruce joined the Indians, it marked the first time that he had played for a team in the American League.

The lack of movement on the free agent market this winter and particularly with top slugging outfielder J.D. Martinez still out there seemingly holding up other players, however, seems to have created a buyers market in January. Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic reports it is a three-year, $39 million deal.

Bruce displayed his usual lefthanded power bat before getting traded away last season.

According to a source, the Mets are also interested in reuniting with free agent reliever Addison Reed.

Jay Bruce is headed back to NY.

Since late last season, the Mets had signaled that their payroll would go down from their team-record $155 million on opening day of the 2017 season.

The 30-year-old was dealt to the Mets from the Cincinnati Reds at the trade deadline in 2016. All together Bruce has played in five postseason series. NY picked up Bruce's $13 million option last offseason but immediately began to shop him around.

Bruce was a surprising pickup by the Tribe on August 9, 2017, acquiring him from the Mets in a non-waiver trade. Since the beginning of 2017, however, Bruce had been the steady engine in the Mets lineup and it's only consistency with Cespedes missing half a season with hamstring injuries.
