The new standard is also backward compatible to ensure flexibility with older Wi-Fi technologies. IEEE is now working on the next gen WiFi standard named 802.11ax which will offer up to 40 percent faster data transfer speed when compared to the current 801.11ac standard.

Celeno Communications, the provider of smart, managed Wi-Fi solutions, has announced its Everest 802.11ax silicon solution created to address the demand for a high performance yet cost optimized solution as well as ensuring rapid migration of existing 802.11ac designs to 802.11ax, the company said. The new chipsets can connect up to 256 devices and can deliver enhanced throughput for a wide range of packet sizes. The certification is done to give consumers the confidence that the device they purchased will indeed work with the new standard. 802.11ax should help in congested situations, though, with its ability to manage more connections more intelligently.

In the e-mail, the Alliance said that most companies will not manufacture devices compliant to 802.11ax this year.

Analyst firm IHS Markit forecasts 802.11ax-enabled device shipments will increase from a relative trickle of 116,000 units in 2019 to a flood of 58 million in 2021. Intel's new chipsets will be based on Draft 2.0 of 802.11ax. In order to offer a smooth transition process for OEMs, Intel has announced that chipsets based on the 802.11ac standard can easily upgrade to 802.11ax without any change to the host SoC.

Wi-Fi router: D-Link's AC2600 Wi-Fi route is based on Intel's Home Wi-Fi Chipset WAV500 Series, which also appears in Asus' Blue Cave Wi-Fi router. There are other chip companies in the connectivity space as well, and Intel making their 802.11ax chips available doesn't alone guarantee mass adoption of the standard. Wi-Fi traffic is offloaded from the SoC to the chipset, thereby, freeing up the SoC for software and security functions.

Obviously, new Wi-Fi standards are great and really important for helping us get online.
