Four dozen programs run by nonprofits and government agencies in San Diego County were awarded more than $20 million in U.S. Housing and Urban Development grants meant to reduce homelessness, it was announced this week.
The funding is part of a record $2 billion being awarded to more than 7,300 local housing and service programs nationwide.
HUD officials won't return the forfeited money to Syracuse, but on Thursday the federal agency said it approved a new $680,000 grant to continue the Shelter Plus Care program this year.
California received roughly $382 million, the most of any state. HUD officials said Western New York received a 3 percent increase over the previous funding cycle, which will bring approximately $360,000 more to the area. To date, that program has housed almost 1,300 formerly homeless individuals, according to the city.

These Continuums of Care will report these one-night "point-in-time counts" later in the year and will form the basis of HUD's 2018 national homeless estimate.
