"Nirenberg and Khorana cracked the genetic code".

His brilliance shone through early, though. He then studied at the Punjab University in Lahore - also now in Pakistan - from where he earned a master's degree in science, according to the official web site of the Nobel Prize. January 9, 1922 is the formal birthday shown in his documents, though the correct date is unknown. His family and its five children were virtually the only literate people in the town.

After a few years, Har Gobind went to work in a university in Vancouver, Canada where he initiated his DNA research. "These amino acids form proteins, which carry out essential cell function". Khorana became an expert on the chemical synthesis of proteins and nucleic acids.

Khorana came from humble beginnings. "His accomplishments didn't stop there".

In its best traditions, the Google has put forth yet another doodle to honor noted scientists Har Gobind Khorana known for his work in the field of DNA and for constructing the first artificial gene.

Several years later, Khorana created the first synthetic gene - a step that led to commercialized gene synthesis at businesses around the world. "In the 1980s Khorana synthesized the gene for rhodopsin, a protein involved in vision".

Apart from the Nobel Prize, Har Gobind also received the National Medal of Science and the Lasker Award.

Khorana's birth anniversary is today; he would have been 96 years old.

-Married to Swiss Esther Elizabeth Sibler, Khorana's biography praised Sibler for bringing a "consistent sense of purpose.at a time when, [Har] Khorana felt out of place everywhere and at home nowhere". In 1970, Har was named Alfred P. Sloan Professor of Biology and Chemistry at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He, being a widower since 2001, was survived by his children, Julia and Davel.

Khorana lived in many countries throughout his life. Khorana was an alumnus of University of Punjab, University of Liverpool and University of Cambridge. In 1945, a fellowship from the government of India gave him the opportunity to study overseas.
