Egypt's ex-PM rescinds decision to run for presidency

"Exercise your right to run for office and vote, do your duty of choosing the president of your country, your voice will certainly make a difference", Lasheen Ibrahim, the judge heading the comission, said at a news conference in Cairo.

President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi has not yet announced his candidacy for next year's elections.

Ibrahim said that candidate registration will start on January 20 and close on January 29, noting that electoral campaigns will kick off on February 22.

That will mark the official start of the campaign, which will run until March 23, Ibrahim said, with final results to be announced on May 1.

Elections in Egypt will be held between March 26 and 28. However, his lawyer said shortly after that he had been arrested and deported to Egypt.

Sisi said in November that the 2018 presidential elections would be held in March or April as scheduled, stressing that he will not seek to change the constitutional limit of two four-year presidential terms, thus ruling out a third presidential term for himself.

However, Ali is now awaiting a final verdict for a previous sentencing of three months in prison for offending public decency after making an "obscene hand gesture" during a demonstration outside the State Council headquarters in January 2017.

In November, former Egyptian Prime Minister Ahmed Shafiq also announced his intention to return from the United Arab Emirates, where he had resided since 2012, in order to run in the 2018 Egyptian elections.

However, he announced on Sunday his final decision not to run for the presidential elections.
