Media reports in Britain quoted Ecuador's Foreign Minister Maria Fernanda Espinosa responding to the decision, as saying: "No solution will be achieved without global cooperation and the co-operation of the United Kingdom, which has also shown interest in seeking a way out".
The Wikileaks founder, 46, initially holed up there to avoid being extradited to Sweden over sexual assault charges, which have now expired due to the time limit. While Sweden temporarily dropped that investigation, British officials say they'd still arrest him on charges of bail jumping.
An FCO spokesman said: 'The Government of Ecuador recently requested diplomatic status for Mr Assange here in the UK. Still, Assange remained in the Ecuadorian embassy for fear of being extradited to the United States for his role in releasing classified US intelligence and military documentation, including a video that depicted usa troops gunning down a number of non-combatants in Baghdad, including two Reuters journalists and children.
"We have reminded Mr Assange that he has no reason to interfere in Ecuadorian politics because his status does not allow it", Moreno told a Spanish newspaper.
The passport could obtain his first step to obtaining diplomatic immunity, as Ecuador wants to resolve Assange's indefinite embassy stay. Shortly before the 2016 USA election, WikiLeaks accused Ecuadorian officials in the London embassy of temporarily cutting off the former computer hacker's internet access for publishing an array of emails belonging to Democratic nominee Hilary Clinton's campaign in a bid to impact the vote. She said in a news conference Thursday in Quito, the Ecuadoran capital, that Assange was granted citizenship on December 12, after having applied for it in September.
