Canada talks tough with free trade talks looming
Canadian officials say if Trump does announce a USA withdrawal, it could be a negotiating tactic created to win concessions. "They can pay for it indirectly through Nafta", the newspaper quoted Trump as saying.
"Canada is prepared for every eventuality, and that is a whole of government preparation".
Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto said on Thursday he is optimistic that the United States, Mexico and Canada can successfully renegotiate the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) to the mutual benefit of the three countries.
His comments were made a day after Canada filed with the World Trade Organization (WTO) almost 200 complaints that Americans breeched global trade rules.
U.S. Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer said the WTO filing was a "broad and ill-advised attack". It will be a positive sign if negotiators can close more chapters and agree to a way ahead on the most contentious issues, she said.
"We are focused on achieving real progress, including in Montreal later this month."
"I understand that makes it a little bit hard for them".
Washington could use the move as leverage over Canada and Mexico in talks to update the 24-year-old trade pact.
The Canadian dollar fell 0.9% to $1.2574 against the greenback at 3:05 p.m.in Toronto. The peso was trading down more than 0.6 pct at 1925 GMT, while the S&P/BM IPC stock index was down about 1.7 per cent.
Canada would welcome an extension of continental trade negotiations beyond a current March deadline, Foreign Minister Chrystia Freeland said Friday in response to the proposal by US President Donald Trump.
Mexican Economy Minister Ildefonso Guajardo has said that Mexico won't negotiate under duress and will leave the table if the United States initiates the withdrawal process.
