U.S. president Donald Trump has confirmed he has cancelled his trip to London, saying he did not want to cut the ribbon on the new United States embassy as he deemed the building's relocation a "bad deal".
President Donald Trump has canceled a trip to London where he had been expected to open the new $1 billion USA embassy, avoiding protests promised by political opponents.
It was, in fact, the Bush administration who signed the deal in 2008-a month before Obama's election-to relocate the U.S. Embassy to the Nine Elms location in Wandsworth, London.
However, the U.S. President claimed that the reason he pulled his visit was his unhappiness with the sale and relocation of the Embassy in London.
The opening ceremony may instead be hosted by US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson.
The prime minister said it was "wrong" for the president to have shared the videos first posted by the far-right Britain First Party.
And London Mayor Sadiq Khan, who has previously clashed with Trump, offered an alternative reason for why the trip may have been cancelled.
This development is particularly shocking because Obama hadn't been elected when the decision was made to move the embassy from Grosvenor Square to Nine Elms.
The new building will open on January 16.
Downing Street has declined to comment on Trump's cancellation of the working visit to the UK. He told the BBC he expected Trump to visit the U.K in the new year, but did not give a date.
The president's no-show "raises questions about the stability of the so-called special relationship: in his first year, Trump has managed to visit Belgium, China, France, Germany, Israel, Italy (twice), Japan, Philippines, Poland, Saudi Arabia, South Korea, Vatican City, Vietnam and the West Bank", says The Times's Matt Chorley.
However, that provoked a sharp response from the UK's Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson - who accused Mr Khan and Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn of putting the UK's "crucial relationship" with the USA at risk.
Mrs. May had been placed in an awkward situation, as Mr. Trump's unpopularity in Britain prompted calls that she stand up to the president or even call off his visit.
