Apple apologises for slowing older iPhones' battery performance
In a statement to The Verge, an HTC spokesperson simply stated that this "is not something we do", with a Motorola representative also stating that that company does "not throttle CPU performance based on older batteries".
Apple came clean last week, and yesterday released additional information on why it slowed older iPhones as well as plans to address the matter.
With the iOS 11.2 update, it applied the same strategy to its iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus.
Barney, who is now a high school student in the United States has discovered reduced performance in nearly every old Apple device which he said has to do with the phone's lithium-ion batteries when his iPhone 6s "became buggy".
There's not proof that something sinister was at work here, but what has been confirmed by Apple is that, beginning with the iOS 10.2.1 update in 2016, processing speeds were intentionally slowed on iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus, iPhone 6s, iPhone 6s Plus and iPhone SE.
The iOS update that started slowing older devices down was in response to an issue users were having with phones suddenly shutting down.
".We know that some of you feel Apple has let you down.We apologise".
Battery replacements for out-of-warranty iPhones typically cost $79, but as a token of apology, Apple has announced that they will reduce the price down to $29.
The 10.2.1 update was created to examine the condition of the battery on iPhone 6 or older models.
Writing on its website on Thursday, Apple apologised for how it handled the battery issue, adding that it would make the changes for customers "to recognise their loyalty and to regain the trust of anyone who may have doubted Apple's intentions". That deal starts in late January and runs through December 2018, according to Apple.
Apple has issued an official statement about the way its phone batteries degrade over time.
"Lithium-ion batteries become less capable of supplying peak current demands when in cold conditions, have a low battery charge or as they age over time, which can result in the device unexpectedly shutting down to protect its electronic components".
"We've always wanted our customers to be able to use their iPhones as long as possible".
