Record-breaking rains hit Las Vegas on Tuesday, leading to flooding and the closing of some major booths, including Google's. "Lights out at CES 2018".
The brightest minds in the world, but nobody thought to think that it can rain in Vegas... Even still, at least the power was restored shortly thereafter.
The power failure followed heavy rain on Tuesday, which had forced Google to shut one of its booths located in the LVCC's auto park. "Again, thank you for your patience during this time", explained the CES Twitter account, at 4:20 p.m. EST.
LG Electronics used the power cut to promote its OLED TV by saying, "Even without power, #CES2018 still can't match the ideal black of an #LGOLEDTV".
"A preliminary assessment indicates that condensation from heavy rainfall caused a flashover on one of the facility's transformers", wrote a statement from the Las Vegas Visitor and Convention Authority, NV Energy and the Consumer Technology Association.
LG's 65in rollable OLED makes every other TV look boring
One of the features LG have been able to implement using the rollable technology is having the TV operate in different formats. In fact, LG's largest existing OLED display is 77-inches with a heavy price tag of $20,000, and that's only in 4K.
Thirty minutes into the blackout, staff at the convention center said that they are aware of the power outage, investigating it, and working on a fix. Those meetings could take place eventually if companies have the flexibility to reschedule, but the outage will likely impact exhibitors' schedules for the duration of CES.
The blackout lasted for about 2 hours and the cause still remains a mystery.
This year's CES is expected to attract more than 180,000 visitors, has 4000 exhibitors and runs from 9 to 12 January 2018.
Someone is having a bad day!
(1:00PM PT) We're hearing that the power is slowly kicking back on. Now a few hours removed from the event, I still feel that way. The blackout has impacted the convention center's North Hall, as well, leaving only the South Hall fully operational. Thankfully, this is CES, so there are plenty of folks on-hand to document the Central Hall evacuation and the freakish scene inside.
At Intel's booth, a woman played the violin to entertain the attendees caught in the dark.

Warm weather and heavy rain could cause flooding
