Trump-Russia probe: Mueller 'demands Deutsche Bank data'

United States special counsel Robert Mueller has asked Germany's Deutsche Bank to provide records of accounts held by Donald Trump, according to reports.

Deutsche Bank, the largest German lender and the force behind multiple Trump projects, received a subpoena several weeks ago, the newspaper Handelsblatt first reported Tuesday.

Deutsche Bank for months has rebuffed calls by Democratic lawmakers to provide more transparency over the roughly $300 million Trump owed to the bank for his real estate dealings prior to becoming president.

Mueller is investigating alleged Russian attempts to influence the election, and potential collusion by Trump aides.

During a photo opportunity with senators at the White House on Tuesday, Mr Trump declined to answer shouted questions from reporters about whether Mr Mueller had crossed a line by asking Deutsche Bank for information.

However, White House spokeswoman Sarah Sanders rejected reports of a subpoena for Trump-related financial records as "completely false", as did Trump's personal attorney Jay Sekulow.

USA intelligence agencies have concluded that Moscow tried to sway the presidential election in favour of Mr Trump. Mueller incorporated several ongoing investigations within the Justice Department including those of Trump campaign contacts with Russian Federation, former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort's business activities and former national security adviser Michael Flynn. A string of bankruptcies at his hotel and casino businesses during the 1990s made most of Wall Street wary of extending him credit.

Much of the investigation so far has focused on contacts between officials in the Trump campaign and transition with Russian officials and representatives.

Trump has also said that it would be a "violation" if Mueller went into his family's finances instead of focusing directly on the mechanisms of influencing the election, part of suggestions that he could fire the former Federal Bureau of Investigation director.

The bank gave the Trump International Hotel and Tower, Chicago, a loan of up to US$640 million, according to a 2012 property filing.

Mr Trump and Deutsche Bank have not always been on good terms.
