Migraine Therapy Showered To Become Prominent These Days

The second study tested fremanezumab (frem-uh-NEZZ-yoo-mab), from Teva Pharmaceutical, for chronic migraine, defined as headaches on 15 or more days per month, at least eight of them migraines. "If somebody is having 10 headaches a month, they get 5 days back".

Patients in the erenumab arm, subjected to higher dose of the drug had registered a significant 3.7-day reduction in monthly migraine days from the baseline of 8.3 days.

"If approved, this treatment would provide physicians with an important new tool to help prevent migraine, reduce a patient's migraine load, and potentially help patients return to normal" says Dr. Silberstein.

In the new study published in the New England Journal of Medicine, researchers tested Erenumab on a total of 955 patients who all suffered from an episodic migraine.

Migraines, often characterised by an intense headache and sensitivity to light, as well nausea and vomiting, can typically last from four to 72 hours.

Across the United Kingdom, an estimated 8.5 million people live with migraine and research suggests the condition is likely to impact the lives of nearly 200,000 people every day.

In a couple of latest studies, two new drugs for migraine headaches have come up to prove their effectiveness in reducing the severity of the condition in persons who have not responded to traditional therapies.

Jury: Mexican man not guilty in San Francisco pier killing
The gun was stolen four days before the killing from the parked vehicle of a visiting Bureau of Land Management ranger. But the politics of immigration were not allowed to come up in the monthlong trial.

The 140mg group had a 3.7-day reduction in monthly migraine days vs. a 3.2-day reduction for the 70mg dose group and a 1.8-day reduction for the placebo group.

There is an urgent need for new treatment options and erenumab is the first and only fully human monoclonal antibody of its kind created to specifically prevent migraine.

"The other thing that is exciting about this class of medicines is that most of the drugs we use for migraine prevention act on the brain, and we use drugs that were developed for epilepsy like topiramate or divalproex sodium, which have a lot of side effects", Lipton said.

About 1,000 patients were given monthly shots for three months: One third got the drug each time, another third got the drug the first time and then dummy shots the next two times, and the rest got dummy shots each time. A ≥50% reduction in the number of headache days was reported by 38% of the quarterly group and 41% in the monthly group, compared to 18% in the placebo group (P .001). Both drugs showed effectiveness in reducing the frequency and severity of the migraine headaches in almost 50 percent of the individuals and the manufacturers have submitted the papers and data for approval to the Food and Drug Administration.

Overall, erenumab was found to be well tolerated with its safety profile on par with placebo during the trial, and also with the safety data recorded throughout the entire clinical program of the drug.

The drug reduced the days where patients suffered from migraine attacks. Eli Lilly and Co. and Alder Biopharmaceuticals also are testing similar drugs.
