Earlier, RT, formerly known as Russia Today, was required to register as a "foreign agent", setting off plans to take a similar measure against US media in Moscow.

Russia's broadside is likely to further sour battered U.S. -Russia relations and is part of the fallout from allegations that the Kremlin meddled in the U.S. presidential election previous year in Donald Trump's favour, something Moscow denies.

Editor-in-Chief's response came after the State Department official noted that the FARA provided for transparency without limiting the freedom of press.

Moscow's response was widely trailed.

Russia on Tuesday named nine media organizations as foreign agents, including Voice of America and Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty, in retaliation for the registration of English-language Russian news network RT as a foreign agent in the United States.

A Duma official, speaking on the condition on anonymity because he is not authorised to speak to reporters, said the Russian law regarding foreign agents would be applied only to U.S. media that receive government funding.

The registration of RT America under the US Foreign Agents Registration Act (FARA) prompted a mirror-like response in Moscow, with several media outlets funded from overseas being included in the Russian foreign agents list.

"So far the full nature of these limitations is unknown", said Kent.

Russian Federation has branded nine media organisations "foreign agents", in an escalation of a long-running battle with the USA over state-funded media organisations. The law leaves it to the Russian Justice Ministry to single them out.

They can be subject to spot checks by the authorities to make sure they comply with the rules, according to the 2012 law, which has forced some NGOs to close.
