Democratic Rep. John Conyers of Michigan stepped down as ranking member of Judiciary Committee amid sexual harassment investigation

Democratic Rep. John Conyers of Michigan stepped down as ranking member of Judiciary Committee amid sexual harassment investigation

Conyers' attorney, Arnold Reed, confirmed to ABC News that the lawmaker meant retiring effective immediately.

John Conyers told a Detroit area radio show that he'll step down from his seat in Congress Tuesday and publicly endorsed his son to replace him once he leaves Capitol Hill.

The move comes amid numerous calls, including from Democratic leadership, for Conyers to step down in light of allegations of sexual misconduct and harassment against him.

MI state Sen. Ian Conyers, a grandson of John Conyers' brother, told The New York Times for a story Tuesday that he plans to run for the 13th District congressional seat.

In the latest turn in the case, another accuser, Elisa Grubbs, says Conyers slid his hand up her skirt and rubbed her thighs while she was sitting next to him in the front row of a church. Conyers eventually acknowledged the settlement, but denied wrongdoing. The group declined last week to call for his resignation, pitting its members against House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., who said he must leave Congress.

The House Ethics Committee is reviewing allegations of harassment against John Conyers.

"It is apparent that if we're going to raise this unholy and unlawful guillotine, calling for the head of John Conyers, then in fairness we must begin with the president of the United States". The committee's website lists Conyers still as a member.

Rep. John Conyers (D-MI) holds a news conference on H.R.1962, the "Free Flow of Information Act of 2013", May 22, 2013 in Washington, DC. "I hope my retirement will be viewed in the larger perspective of my record of service as I enter a new chapter", the statement from Conyers read.

Ian Conyers did not go into detail with the Times on the allegations against his family member, but said he would stand with him.

Conyers, who was first elected in 1964, easily won re-election previous year in the heavily Democratic 13th District.

The elder Conyers, however, continued to deny the allegations leveled against him. I'm a co-sponsor on all of them.

Melanie Sloan, a former Conyers aide and Washington lawyer, told The Washington Post last week that Conyers harassed and verbally abused her when she worked for his Washington office in the 1990s.

The furor over Conyers unfolded as the sexual misconduct allegations against Franken and Alabama Senate candidate Roy Moore sent members of both parties rushing to choose sides. The RealClearPolitics average has him up by 1.5 points in the polls, and many-but not all-signs point to his winning the seat.
