Ravens CB Smith suspended 4 games for PED violation

Baltimore Ravens cornerback Jimmy Smith was hit with a four-game suspension due to violating the NFL's substance abuse policy.

Pro Football Focus has Smith ranked as the No. 12 cornerback this year.

Smith has been dealing with a sore Achilles for the most part of this season, but it finally gave out on him on Sunday, as he went down in the second quarter and did not return.

Smith, 29, chose to drop his appeal and begin serving his suspension after being injured in the 44-20 victory over the Detroit Lions, a source told ESPN's Adam Schefter. He had played throughout the campaign despite pain in his Achilles, recording 28 tackles and three interceptions.

Injuries have consistently hampered Smith's career.

"He has played at an All-Pro level this year", Coach John Harbaugh said. "When he was out, it probably did make a difference". We have a lot of good, young players. Smith will miss a total of 17 games over the past four seasons.

Rookie first-round pick Marlon Humphrey will replace Smith in the starting lineup this week when the Ravens (7-5) travel to play the AFC North-leading Pittsburgh Steelers (9-2) in a Sunday night game. Humphrey came in for Smith against the Lions on Sunday and was quickly beat for two deep balls by Marvin Jones, however, Humphrey did come up with an interception in the game.
