Nintendo reportedly delays 64GB game cartridges and it might affect the Switch's popularity
And with microSD card prices being more expensive than they should be, with 256GB costing Rs. 8,000 upwards, buying and playing games on the Nintendo Switch seems more expensive than Nintendo advertises it to be. We're now learning that this move has been delayed.
While this might be a problem for the American developers of Nintendo Switch games. Previously the company had said it would make the cards available in the second half of 2018, according to the WSJ, which cited unnamed people familiar with the matter. On top of a neat gimmick and a ton of great Nintendo games, it's also been appealing to third-party developers who largely ignored the Wii U. But one issue has been that the cartridges its games come on have a maximum capacity of 32 GB.
However, many 3rd-party developers will continue to offer the remaining content that couldn't fit on the card initially as a download as seen previously.
By comparison, Blu-ray discs for the PS4 and Xbox One can hold 50 GB of data. How do you feel about the premium cost of the Nintendo Switch? Switch game cards now support 32GB of storage, and they're able to easily hold games like Super Mario Odyssey and The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. Currently, users can play games on the Switch by purchasing physical cartridges, or downloading the games on the Switch.
Switching back to cartridges hasn't just left a mark on the higher price tag of Nintendo's games, but also posed a tough limitation on storage for developers to abide by.
If there's not enough room on the cartridge, users have to download the rest - or the entire game - to the system's onboard storage, which quickly fills up. "Those publishers may wait for the 64-gigabyte card to release those kinds of games for the Switch".
