Michael Flynn Vowed to End Russia Sanctions, According to Whistleblower

07 December 2017, 12:58 | Terri Saunders

Flynn told associate Russia sanctions would be 'ripped up' early in Trump presidency

Flynn texted partners about nuclear plan during inauguration, whistleblower says

On Inauguration Day 2017, business associate of former National Security Advisor Mike Flynn touted texts from Flynn promising to gut Russian sanctions that were hindering the nuclear project the associate was pushing, a whistleblower has told House Democrats.

"The account is the strongest evidence to date that the Trump administration wanted to end the sanctions immediately, and suggests that Mr. Flynn had a possible economic incentive for the United States to forge a closer relationship with Russian Federation". Copson is the managing director of ACU Strategic Partners, a Washington-based company that Flynn said he advised from April 2015 through June 2016, according to a financial disclosure he filed this August.

The whistleblower also heard from Copson that Flynn would try to reduce sanctions against Russian Federation as "one of his first orders of business and that this would allow money to start flowing into the project", Cummings wrote.

Minutes into Trump's inauguration speech, Flynn also texted the ex-partner, who wanted to work with Russian Federation to build nuclear reactors across the Middle East, that the plan, threatened by Obama's sanctions, was "good to go".

On Inauguration Day, according to the letter, the whistleblower met with an individual who was working with Flynn to promote a project with Russia, Alex Copson, who told the whistleblower that Flynn would ensure the sanctions would be removed, paving the way for the project to continue.

Flynn pleaded guilty last week to lying to the Federal Bureau of Investigation about the nature of his conversations with former Russian ambassador Sergei Kislyak.

Cummings, in a letter to Trey Gowdy, the Republican chairman of the Oversight Committee, detailed the whistleblower's allegations and called on the committee to subpoena Flynn to testify. According to this account, Copson blamed President Barack Obama for the sanctions, stating that he "fucked everything up in my nuclear deal with the sanctions".

Gowdy has not responded to requests from ABC NEWS for comment.

Lebanon PM Hariri revokes resignation as all parties agree on deal
But two weeks ago, Hariri arrived back in Beirut and said he would suspend his resignation at the request of his government. Hezbollah, however, needs a Sunni partner in Lebanon and will make an effort to maintain Hariri's coalition government.

The Newsweek account prompted Cummings to launch an investigation of the arrangement.

As the whistleblower chatted with Flynn's associate during an Inauguration Day celebration on January 20, Flynn sent texts saying the associate's nuclear proposal was "good to go", the whistleblower said.

"Although this individual was extremely hesitant to come forward - and still fears retaliation - the whistleblower has made a decision to do so now because this individual feels duty bound as a citizen to make this disclosure", he wrote.

Copson showed the witness the text on his phone.

House Oversight Democrats posted a thorough exposé to Medium, including a letter by Democratic Rep. Elijah Cummings about the whistleblower.

Cummings said he had found the unnamed informant to be "authentic, credible and reliable", and offered to produce the person for Gowdy. Special Counsel Robert Mueller had reportedly asked Cummings to hold off on making the whistleblower's allegations public, until now.

The Wall Street Journal reported in September that while in the White House Flynn promoted a project that would involve building dozens of nuclear plants around the Middle East.

Neither Copson nor an attorney for ACU responded to a request for comment.
