Kirstjen Nielsen Confirmed As New DHS Secretary

The Senate voted 62 to 37 on December 5 to confirm Kirstjen Nielsen (shown) as the next secretary of Homeland Security.

"There will be no on-the-job training for Kirstjen", Trump said when he announced her nomination in October, praising her "sterling reputation". They also cited concerns about possible White House interference in a recent DHS decision to send home thousands of Nicaraguans and Haitians long granted USA protection.

"While I am glad that the Department of Homeland Security will soon finally have a permanent leader for the first time since July, there is still much we do not know about Ms. Nielsen's plans for the Department", said Rep. Bennie Thompson, R-Miss., ranking member of the House Homeland Security Committee. Nielsen was the second woman to head this ministry after Janet Napolitano, who was in office from 2009 to 2013. With her understanding of the challenges facing our nation and her experience in prevention and preparedness, I believe that she will excel as the next Secretary of Homeland Security.

That concerned some Democrats, who tried to block her confirmation.

Although several Democrats voted to confirm Nielsen, some expressed concern over the 45-year-old's experience level.

Nielsen will take over for Acting Secretary Elaine Duke, and will be sworn-in sometime in the coming days.

Nielsen "is ready to answer this call to duty", Johnson said.

Billy Bush outrage over Trump denial of 'grab them by the pussy'
They switched topics, and Bush talked and talked - and admitted that he was trying to keep Colbert from playing the video. Bush also brought up the women who have accused Trump of sexual assault. "Just kiss.

But both Kelly and Nielsen have said that a wall on the entire 3,200 kilometres frontier with Mexico would be inappropriate, and that other measures, including electronic monitoring, would be required as well. Nielsen said the federal government should adjust its modeling and preparation for dealing with weather events related to climate changes, but refused to acknowledge the alleged human contributions to those changes.

Nielsen's "work in and around the department since its creation, as well as her knowledge of cybersecurity, risk management and critical infrastructure, should serve her well in confronting the daunting threats to our homeland", said Sen.

Her confirmation came on a day when DHS reclaimed substantial success in slowing illegal immigration across the southern border and arresting and deporting criminal aliens.

After her confirmation, Breitbart News, the alt-right mouthpiece run by former Trump strategist Steve Bannon, mocked her as "Lady DACA" - a reference to her assurance to Sen.

As we noted in that report, the Trump administration's actions left Original DACA recipients unaffected.

The Justice Department under Sessions, and DHS under Nielsen, will share in enforcing different portions of immigration law.
