Google Celebrates 50 Years of Kids Coding Languages With an Interactive Doodle
Today's Google doodle is the first-ever coding doodle by "Coding for Carrots". The annual programme is being held from December 4-10 this year.
She writes that like Logo, Scratch was developed at MIT by building on Papert's early ideas about kids and computers.
Blockly is another visual coding editor, that is not just created to be kid friendly.
That's not so different from how kids coding language Logo worked. With Logo, children could program the movements of a turtle, giving them the opportunity to explore ideas in math and science.
The programming software acts like a game for children and works like a jigsaw when the kids are playing it.
Google Doodle Coding Interface starts
Could this be the most fun Google Doodle ever? "In the interactive Doodle "Coding for Carrots" that you program and help the furry friends on 6 levels in search of carrots by binding blocks coding based on the Scratch programming language for children", - explained the developers. Papert and his colleagues, had realised the potential of computer, way back then and had known that in some years it would evolve as an instrumental tool and would help children to learn new things.
After working as an engineer at Google for some time, I now work on the Scratch Team at MIT, where we're focused on developing new ways for kids to express themselves creatively through coding.
This week is also Computer Science Education Week, which also makes it the flawless time to look back on 50 years of kids coding. They saw coding as a way for kids to develop confidence and fluency with a piece of powerful, modern, and one-day ubiquitous technology.
MIT's Champika Fernando said in Google's post about kids coding that Scratch is "designed to be less intimidating than typical programming languages, but just as powerful and expressive". The first kids coding language was Logo, and it was introduced in the 1960s, decades before computers started landing on desks in people's homes. She adds that she hopes people will find this experience appealing and engaging enough to be encouraged to pursue it further. It also includes a link to Teacher Resources in case you plan to teach code in the classroom.

Derrick Rose to return to Cavaliers
Rose's increasing frustration with injuries had caused him to question his desire to continue playing, league sources have said. He suffered his first injury this season to his right ankle on October 20, but returned to the team after missing four games.
