JAL aims to go supersonic with investment in Boom Supersonic
Yoshiharu Ueki, president of JAL, said: "Through this partnership, we hope to contribute to the future of supersonic travel with the intent of providing more "time" to our valued passengers while emphasising flight safety". "We will continue to engage with other global carriers to maximize the value of JAL's investment and bring back supersonic commercial travel". By relying on non-afterburning engines, composite structures and existing technology, the Boom airliner will be created to operate at a quarter of the costs of Concorde.
As part of the arrangement, JAL also now has the option to purchase up to 20 Boom Supersonic aircraft once they become commercially available.
No commercial supersonic transport has been in use since both Air France and British Airways retired the Concorde in 2003.
Blake Scholl, the founder and chief executive of Boom Supersonic, said: "You won't have to be on the Forbes' list to be able to fly, it will cost about the same as flying business class today".
"Think about for a moment the families that are separated because of the long flights".
The iconic plane flew regularly between Europe and NY for 27 years but was withdrawn from service because of high costs.

Boom has previously disclosed that at least one of the unidentified customers is based in Europe. The Spaceship Company, a subsidiary of Richard Branson's Virgin Group, also has agreed to provide Boom with engineering, manufacturing and flight-test services.
Plane makers covet the backing of large and established airlines.
A major Japanese airline is investing in a Colorado startup building a supersonic passenger airliner for business travelers and has reserved the right to buy several of the super-fast planes in a few years.
Multiple engine companies have formed teams to respond to Boom's request for proposals, Scholl says. Orders were spread across five airlines.
