Atlanta mayoral candidate demands recount after close loss

Atlanta's mayoral race is coming to a close
In a tight race, Keisha Lance Bottoms has declared victory in the race for Atlanta mayor.
Just after midnight, Independent candidate Mary Norwood called for a recount as her Democratic opponent Keisha Lance Bottoms celebrated the result. Earlier this week, Tyrese shared an Instagram clip urging Atlanta voters to show their support for Bottoms on "the most important day, period" for "culture, diversity, voice, access, equal opportunities, [and] everything pertaining to what we stand for in the city of Atlanta". "We knew that every single vote would matter".
The race was close, and only minutes into Wednesday morning, at the same time Bottoms was celebrating her win, Norwood was calling for a closer look at the results.
Norwood trails behind Bottoms by just 759 votes after Tuesday's election and has requested a recount because of the close margin.
But Norwood took the podium at her own rally and said that absentee ballots from military members were yet to figure in the totals, and she believes some ballots have yet to be tabulated.
"I am just in awe of what God is able to do", Bottoms said to a crowd of her supporters on Tuesday night.
Keisha Lance Bottoms elected Atlanta's new mayor, touts Black girl magic
A Norwood victory would mean Atlanta - a gentrifying city where the African American share of the population remains a majority but has gone down over the years - would have its first white mayor in more than 40 years.
"It's not over yet", Norwood said. "She's no Johnny-come-lately".
Jeffrey Brower, 45, a white man who lives in the East Atlanta neighborhood, said he voted for Norwood, but that his vote was more a vote against Bottoms and Reed.
Bottoms will be the second Black woman to lead the city of Atlanta as mayor following Shirley Franklin, who served from 2002 to 2010.
"Kasim seemed to be more about what's best for Kasim than what's best for the city", Brower said.
