Asus, HP Debut Snapdragon-Powered Windows Laptops

At Qualcomm's Snapdragon Summit in Hawaii, the first Windows 10 laptop running on Snapdragon has been announced. Just that the NovaGo is running a mobile processor does not put the device into isolation. As with the outgoing Snapdragon 835, Samsung is the fabrication partner, and the 845 will be built on the company's 10nm process.

"It's not a matter of if, but when all PCs will become Always Connected PCs", said Myerson.

Equipping a laptop with mobile connectivity is not necessarily new - Intel has been doing it for years with their own modems (such as the XMM7260 and XMM7360), mostly in business end devices or Chromebooks.

Now that Microsoft and Qualcomm finally delivered Windows 10 on ARM, which they promised a year ago, we will be giving an insight view to the products that were launched in today's Qualcomm's event.

On the specs front, the Envy X2 is definitely the more premium-looking of the two models, and has a 12.3-inch 1920 x 1280 pixel display with up to 8GB of RAM and 256GB of storage.

These devices are deigned to be always on like your phone and Asus says the NovaGo will offer more than 30 days of standby time.

No need to tether with a smartphone, and no need to deal with offline mode in documents as this always-connected Windows machine has a built-in eSIM, plus a battery that's capable of up to 22 hours of video playback.

The HP Envy x2 is more akin to a Microsoft Surface, with the ability to be used as a tablet, placed upright with a hinged stand on the back of the device, or connected to a keyboard mat. This is also the first notebook that runs full Windows 10 on the ARM CPU. The Snapdragon 835 SoC is complemented by up to 8 GB RAM and up to 256 GB UFS 2.0 storage.

The HP Envy x2 will be available from Spring 2018 with no word yet as to pricing, but it looks like a promising device. "OEMs around the world will now be able to combine the recently announced AMD Ryzen mobile processors with Qualcomm Technologies' leading wireless solutions via their Snapdragon LTE modem family to achieve new levels of performance, connectivity and capability for ultrathin notebook PCs". Frost didn't mention a stylus, but the machine was pictured with such a pen attached to its case, so it probably supports Windows Ink.
