Apple offering $29 battery replacements for a year after slowing down iPhones

Following huge waves of criticism and several lawsuits slamming Apple for purposely slowing down older iPhones to balance power consumption from aged batteries, the tech giant has now issued an apology and has reduced the cost of an out-of-warranty battery replacement from $79 to $29.

One suitor is apparently more angered than the rest, as Hype Beast reports that one lawsuit is asking for $999 billion in a settlement.

It's possible that's just a coincidence, but others will take it as confirmation that the old conspiracy theory is true, and Apple slows down iPhones to force people to buy new phones.

"An analysis of China Province-level mobile phone export data this week reinforces our cautious opinion on Apple's iPhone cycle", analyst Aaron Rakers wrote in a note to clients Wednesday entitled "iPhone-Related China Data Analysis: Implying Limited / No Yr/Yr Growth Thus Far In 4Q17". An HTC spokesperson plainly said that "is not something we do", while a Motorola spokesperson said the following: "We do not throttle CPU performance based on older batteries".

The new message goes on to explain how rechargeable batteries age and how the battery's performance changes over its lifespan.

Apple CEO Tim Cook's total compensation package for 2017 is $102…
The shareholder meeting will be held February 13, 2018, at the Steve Jobs Theater on Apple's new campus in Cupertino, Calif. Apple SVP of retail Angela Ahrendts and SVP of hardware technologies Johny Srouji took home about $24.2 million for 2017.

Apple will issue an update to its operating system early next year to give users a better understanding of the health of their battery.

Apple also addressed customers' frustration over longer launch times for apps and other performance issues. Most of the phones suffering from slower performance were running on their original batteries. Apple's revenue for the quarter was up 12.2% compared to the same quarter last year. equities analysts anticipate that Apple Inc. will post 11.18 earnings per share for the current fiscal year.

Apple initially believed that slower performance was due to minor bugs and typical lags that come from upgrades, as some users had reported. Details will be provided soon on apple.com. We're proud that Apple products are known for their durability, and for holding their value longer than our competitors' devices.

At Apple, our customers' trust means everything to us.

The offer comes on the heels of a growing number of lawsuits filed against Apple in the wake of its admission of deliberately slowing down older iPhones to prevent unexpected shutdowns as batteries age. iPhone owners in Florida, California, Illinois, New York and New Jersey are seeking class-action status in suits with plaintiffs saying they bought new iPhones because of the slow downs. We will never stop working to earn and maintain it.
