US online retail giant announces "biggest holiday" sales gain
Amazon issued an after-Christmas press release - as always, it talked a lot about its services but was shy on details.
More than one billion items were ordered from small businesses and entrepreneurs this season, according to Amazon, with 140 million ordered over the five-day period from Thanksgiving through Cyber Monday. "Thank you to the millions of customers and hundreds of thousands of Amazon employees all around the world who made this holiday better than ever before".
"We're excited that people continued to join Prime this holiday, to take advantage of more fast and free shipping options plus new convenient delivery like Amazon Key, as well as early access to Lightning Deals and unlimited streaming of TV shows and movies, including Prime Originals and more", Jeff Wilke, Amazon's worldwide consumer CEO, said in a statement. Amazon's peak day of customer fulfillment in 2017 was December 19.
In its press release Amazon said it sold "tens of millions" Alexa-enabled devices around the world, although it didn't give more specific figures.
