Amazon to launch Prime membership for Singapore, ends free shipping for non-members

Amazon Prime Launches In Singapore, Subscription Starts From $2.99/Month
Singapore Prime members are also entitled to unlimited free worldwide shipping on orders above S$60 from Amazon US.
Streaming service Amazon Prime Video and gaming subscription service Twitch Prime are bundled as part of the membership. Amazon Prime is also available in India and Japan, so its Asian penetration is growing quickly to encompass a large portion of the fast-growing region.
Therefore, currently, only Prime members will be eligible for free global shipping on orders above $60 to more than five million products listed on Amazon's site in the United States, which will be made available on the Prime Now mobile app.
This launch will put pressure on Lazada, the e-commerce site owned by Alibaba, which is Amazon's primary competitor in Southeast Asia.
This follows news that the American e-commerce giant has ended its FREE AmazonGlobal Saver Shipping service yesterday, 5 December.
The online retailer will offer Amazon Handmade products through its two-hour delivery service Prime Now, which normally carries household convenience items found in drugstores.
However, as an introductory offer, Amazon only charge S$2.99, though Amazon decline to inform of how long the promotion will last.

Membership in the United States costs US$10.99 a month or US$99 a year, and provides access to a slew of services such as music streaming, free same-day delivery and even restaurant delivery in certain areas.
Mr Amos Tan, a Singapore Polytechnic senior lecturer in marketing and retail, said Amazon's removal of free shipping for non-members is a way of trying to lock in more customers.
He added that Prime membership is "country-specific and not-transferable" so those with USA memberships are unable to use it locally, and that he encouraged Singaporeans "to leverage the Prime membership package developed specifically for Singapore".
Other consumers are looking for more services to be added to Prime. They're getting Amazon Prime, but only for products that they purchase from Amazon in the U.S. some 9,000 odd miles away.
Lazada had launched its own subscription-based customer loyalty program LiveUp in Singapore in April.
LiveUp offers users benefits such as rebates and discounts for RedMart, Netflix, Uber, UberEats and Taobao Collection.
The launch of this service here is due to the strong response and adoption of the Prime Now app in the past few months.
