Zimbabwe Ruling Party Calls Military Chief's Comments Treasonous

The ruling party will next month hold an extra ordinary congress to reaffirm Mugabe's candidature in next year's presidential elections and also amend the party constitution to allow for a female vice president.

Tensions rose in Harare on Tuesday as armoured vehicles, military police and soldiers from Zimbabwe's powerful military drove through the outskirts of the capital.

Here are some of the reactions from reports of tanks being seen heading to Harare.

Witnesses said one of the tanks, which was pointed in the direction of the capital, had come of its tracks.

Zimbabwe's ruling party described criticism of its conduct by armed forces commander Constantine Chiwenga as "treasonable" and meant to incite insurrection in the southern African nation, deepening the split between the military and 93-year-old President Robert Mugabe.

"The current purging and cleansing process in Zanu-PF which so far is targeting mostly members associated with our liberation history is a serious cause for concern to us in the defense forces", he said apparently stung by the recent dismissal of Emmerson Mnangagwa as the country's vice president.

Mnangagwa was dismissed after clashing with Mugabe's wife, Grace, who is now in prime position to succeed her 93-year-old husband.

"We must remind those behind the current treacherous shenanigans that, when it comes to matters of protecting our revolution, the military will not hesitate to step in", said General Constantino Chiwenga in a statement.

Chiwenga on Monday issued a hard hitting statement urging the ruling party to stop expulsion of party members with a liberation war background.

It is rare for the defence forces to publicly take sides in the affairs of ZANU-PF.

The former junior administrator is detested by numerous independence-era war veterans, who once enjoyed a privileged role in the ruling party under Mugabe, but who have increasingly been banished from senior government and party roles in recent years.

Political analysts however say the military stayed quiet then because the beneficiary of Mujuru's downfall was the 75-year-old Mnangagwa, a war veteran.

Chris Mutsvangwa, the head of the war veterans' group, told reporters in Johannesburg last week that Grace Mugabe was "a mad woman" who had won power through a "coup.by marriage certificate".

The ZANU-PF Youth League on Monday also criticized Chiwenga's statement and accused him of trying to subvert the country's constitution.

"Chiwenga threw down the gauntlet to Mugabe.it would make sense for Chiwenga to organise some military manoeuvres to up the ante".
