The chances of experiencing sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) after sex are slim, but in those rare cases mortality rates are high, reports a study presented this week at the American Heart Association's Scientific Sessions symposium.

Most of the victims of sex-induced heart stoppages were taking cardiovascular medications, an indication that these people had a history of heart problems - as opposed to dying during sex with no warning.

"People will ask their doctors if sex increases their risk of sudden death, and we've never had the answer before because there never was a study", said Chugh, the study's senior author and a highly respected expert on sudden cardiac arrest.

Research led by Dr. Sumeet Chugh, associate director of the Cedars-Sinai Heart Institute in Los Angeles, showed that after reviewing more than 300,000 cardiac deaths each year in the US, less than 1 percent were linked with having sex. The risk of that happening is very low, according to a new study. That means that sex is linked to only about one in a hundred cases of cardiac arrest in men. A 2011 study by researchers at Harvard found that sex is easier than working out on a treadmill - and the heart rates of the men in the study rarely rose above 130 beats a minute.

A cardiac arrest happens when the heart malfunctions and suddenly stops beating.

Survival often depends on how quickly patients receive cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), or chest compressions, which can help restore circulation and maintain blood flow to vital organs.

As for if there was some "home cookin" during the Slam Dunk Contest, Silver joked about MJ being one of his bosses. Los Angeles Lakers center Kareem Abdul Jabbar also became the all-time leading scorer in All-Star Game history.

The more disturbing finding, according to Chugh and his team, was that other people who witnessed the sudden cardiac arrest, like a sexual partner, only performed potentially life-saving bystander CPR about one-third of the time.

Cardiac arrest involves the abrupt loss of heart function, breathing and consciousness.

The researchers noted that sudden cardiac arrest kills more than 300,000 people in the USA every year and physical activity, particularly when the person is not accustomed to it, is linked to a higher risk of the condition.

Of the total cohort who suffered SCAs in the 13-year study period, the authors found just 0.7 percent of the pool-34 patients-experienced SCAs related to sex.

"This highlights the importance of continued efforts to educate the public on the importance of CPR, no matter the circumstance", Chugh said.
