Uber to be sued $2000 per violation after data breach

Washington state sues Uber for millions over data breach cover up
Under Washington's revised data breach law, businesses are required to notify consumers within 45 days if their personal information was accessed by an unauthorized person.
When Uber learned of the breach, it did not notify law enforcement, consumers, or drivers, but instead paid the hackers $100,000 to delete the data they had stolen.
According to Uber, the 2.7 million figure is "approximate rather than an accurate and definitive account" - this is because the information gathered by the firm's app does not always specify where users live.
Earlier today, the British Information Commissioner's Office said about 2.7 million user accounts in the United Kingdom were affected.
Uber has revealed that 2.7m riders and drivers have been affected by the massive hack which hit 57m worldwide.
"The Board will be calling Uber's attention on the matter of its alleged admission on the breach of data privacy and will conduct its own investigation", LTFRB board member Aileen Lizada said in a text message to reporters on Wednesday. "There is no excuse for keeping this information from consumers".
The ICO said names, mobile phone numbers and email addresses were taken, details which could expose victims to social engineering attempts. Ferguson says that Uber did not notify his office until this month, more than a year after the breach.
Under current British law organisations which fail to disclose data breaches to regulators face a maximum fine of up to 500,000 pounds.
The lawsuit seeks civil penalties in the millions of dollars. With investigations under way by the attorneys general of Connecticut, Illinois, Massachusetts, Missouri, New Mexico, and NY, there will likely be more on this front soon.
Digital minister Matt Hancock said in a written statement: "The government expects Uber to respond fully to the incident with the urgency it demands and to provide the appropriate support to its customers and drivers in the UK".
