Today, Twitter announced it would pause the verification process, meaning anyone on the platform trying to get a blue checkmark will have to wait, for the time being. Twitter says that the check is exclusively meant to "authenticate identity & voice" but that rather it has been interpreted as "an endorsement or an indicator of importance". Those requesting verification have to provide a phone number, a confirmed email, a short biography, a profile photo and more to earn their verified status on the site. People can apply for verification by submitting basic identifying information to Twitter.

If you have been waiting for a blue tick from Twitter, sorry.

Twitter said it would overhaul its method for verifying users after facing a groundswell of outrage for confirming an avowed white supremacist.

Milo Yiannopoulos, former contributor for the right-wing site Breitbart, was also verified and then "un-verified" by Twitter, according to Vanity Fair, before he was permanently banned from the site. Following intense backlash regarding the verification of white supremacist users and users with extreme political views, verification of accounts has temporarily been suspended until further notice. Verifications have been "paused" until the company can resolve the "confusion". Twitter's user guidelines allow for anonymous accounts, and anonymous users have been a big part of Twitter's identity and culture since the company's founding. "Looks like I FINALLY got verified by Twitter", he wrote Tuesday.
