According to the study, TSA screeners, equipment, and procedures failed more than half the time. In that test, operatives successfully smuggled both fake weapons and fake explosives through airport security.

While the TSA catches scores of people with weapons - notably former Trump White House adviser Sebastian Gorka a year ago at Reagan National Airport - the inspector general's report in 2015 said that operatives from the office penetrated airport security in about 95 percent of their attempts.

Inspectors revealed their results on Wednesday to the House Committee on Homeland Security during a classified briefing.

Despite TSA's incredibly poor evaluation on the undercover tests this year, in 2015, DHS found that the agency failed 95 percent of tests aimed at stopping covert inspectors from smuggling weapons, explosive materials or other potentially deadly objects through screening.

Word of those security lapses has some travelers at RDU International Airport anxious.

The undercover agents carrying the items slipped past security checkpoints more than 70 percent of the time, CBS News reported, while a source told ABC News that the figure was around 80 percent.

'We take the OIG's findings very seriously and are implementing measures that will improve screening effectiveness at checkpoints, ' said TSA administrator David Pekoske.

"We are focused on staying ahead of a dynamic threat to aviation with continued investment in the workforce, enhanced procedures, and new technologies", Pekoske, who was just sworn in this August, said in the statement.

US President Donald Trump sent a letter to Congress on Monday requesting $5.9 billion in new funding for the Pentagon while reiterating a plea for $1.6 billion in new funding for the border wall, Government Executive reports.

The DHS suggested eight classified recommendations following the operation and, according to CBS News, lawmakers and TSA officials plan to replace old check point scanners with new CT scanners, which Pekoske said are equipped with the most effective technology.

Pekoske said that "to invest in the CT technology requires funding above what TSA now has", but the agency wasn't on the path to CT development at checkpoints when the budget was developed, so the program wasn't reviewed for investment.
