Philippines' Duterte set for drug war backing at summit

Rodrigo Duterte admits stabbing rival to death when he was 16

The US president arrives in the Philippine capital on Sunday for a summit of Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) leaders during the last leg of a tour that earlier took him to Japan, South Korea, China and Vietnam.

Duterte has faced human rights abuse accusations as he pushes a drug crackdown in the country.

Progressive solons protested yesterday the arrival of United States President Donald Trump, as they warned President Duterte against "idolizing" the "No. 1 war-mongering fascist president of the world". "I never, never, never ordered any single policeman in this country to say, just kill them without any reason". Duterte had a brief chat with Trump during the leaders' retreat. "Please let me know", Trump said.

Police have reported killing almost 4,000 in his anti-drug war, and many thousands of murders remain unexplained, but Duterte insists he is not responsible for any unlawful deaths. Philippine police said past year that almost 6,000 people had been killed in the violence.

Many Filipinos back Duterte, believing he is taking necessary measures to fight crime.

A senior USA official later tried to walk back Trump's comment, stating that Trump was merely acknowledging the U.S. is combating its own drug problem, not condoning violence and human rights violations.

Domestic opponents have appealed to the International Criminal Court to investigate, pointing to the jailing of opponents, a compliant congress and intimidated judiciary as reasons to step in.

"It's going to be very interesting because you have two individuals that are very much alike in their thinking, their language and demeanor, meeting for the first time", Roque said. "One fight there, another here", he said this week, in Vietnam ahead of the recent Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) meeting.

Near the end of Obama's tenure, Duterte said Obama was a "son of a bitch" who could "go to hell".

But Trump and Duterte have expressed mutual admiration for other.

Calling President Duterte and Trump "fascists", Karapatan secretary general Tinay Palabay stressed how the USA supports the Duterte administration's bloody War on Drugs, giving $9 million to the program for 2017.

'We will be extremely disappointed if Trump does not raise it, ' Amnesty's Philippine director, Jose Noel Olano, told reporters on Saturday.

The premiers of China and Russian Federation, two other important Duterte backers, will also be in Manila.
