A trailer has dropped for "The Post", and it looks serious.

The Washington Post did opt to continue publishing the Pentagon Papers; not only did it manage to survive the government's attack on its First Amendment freedoms, but it would go on to break the story of the Watergate scandal just a few years later. It has a score by John Williams, and-oh yeah, did we mention it stars Meryl Streep and Tom Hanks, teaming up on the big screen for the very first time?

Meryl Streep and Tom Hanks are fiercely holding power to account in the first trailer for Steven Spielberg's The Post. The script was written by Liz Hannah and Josh Singer, and the film features an acclaimed ensemble cast including Alison Brie, Carrie Coon, David Cross, Bruce Greenwood, Tracy Letts, Bob Odenkirk, Sarah Paulson, Jesse Plemons, Matthew Rhys, Michael Stuhlbarg, Bradley Whitford and Zach Woods.

The trailer debuted during "The Late Show With Stephen Colbert" Tuesday night, as the host called it "a Marvel trailer if Meryl Streep was playing Thor".

The movie hits theaters nationwide on December 22. That's an uncommonly fast turnaround. It seems to have grown out of 2015 Best Picture victor Spotlight's boost of procedural tales about investigative journalism done right, despite great odds - while alsodrawing on the recent popularity of stories about women overcoming historical workplace sexism. Not only is The Post based on a true story, it's based on a true story about journalists trying to expose corruption, and we know how the Academy feels about those, even in happier times. "All the President's Men" won four Oscars in 1977, though the movie lost the best picture prize to "Rocky".
