Rocket Issue Delays Launch of Advanced New JPSS-1 Weather Satellite

15 November 2017, 12:47 | Terri Saunders

The most important weather satellite you've never heard of launches to space Tuesday

Boulder's Ball Aerospace, NOAA primed for polar-orbiting satellite launch has been seven years in the planning

"The successful contract transition is an important milestone for the Joint Polar Satellite Systems, since ATMS is one of its key operational weather sensors", said Dr. Steve Toner, vice president of Northrop Grumman's Overhead Persistent Infrared and Azusa Programs business unit.

Polar satellites like the JPSS-1, which orbit the globe from pole-to-pole 14 times a day, are considered the backbone of the global observing system.

"It's always exciting to launch a satellite", Asbury said Friday.

We will see increasing clouds through the day and some showers could come through late in the evening to the overnight hours. This afternoon clouds will stick around for much of the day with highs struggling this afternoon hitting the mid 40s.

It reported 385,888 images of local businesses posted by Yelp users had appeared in Google's local search results, a direct violation of the settlement.

The new satellite will be the most advanced polar-orbiting weather platform the USA has yet put to use, NOAA officials said, since it will carry upgraded instruments able to gather more weather information than ever before. "Using polar satellite data, we have been able to provide emergency managers with more accurate forecasts, allowing them to pre-position equipment and resources days before a storm". It will be mounted atop the first stage of the rocket, seen on the left, as preparations continue for the launch of the Joint Polar Satellite System-1, or JPSS-1. Sensors aboard the spacecraft will collect measurements of air, ocean, and ground conditions, as well as fire locations, temperatures and water vapor throughout the atmosphere. The CubeSat is the first of four planned as part of the JPSS series. "We have luckily avoided any gaps". JPSS will provide more detailed information about atmospheric temperature and air moisture leading to more accurate near-term weather predictions. The data can be used to better predict weather events and hazards, such as a hurricane's track and a hurricane's intensity.

A Delta II rocket launch that was scheduled for early Tuesday morning from Vandenberg Air Force Base was scrubbed at the last minute and postponed for at least 24 hours. If the launch is successful, the satellite will be fully functional in about three to six months, Pica said.

Ball Aerospace designed and built the JPSS-1 satellite bus, and Ozone Mapping and Profiler Suite instrument, integrated all five of the spacecraft's instruments and performed satellite-level testing and launch support.
