Magnitude 7.3 earthquake hits Iraq, Iran

Iranian state TV says a 7.2-magnitude quake has jolted the region near the border between Iran and Iraq.

The quake was centred about 30km southwest of Halabjah and 100km from the city of As-Sulaymaniyah, in the semi-autonomous Kurdistan region.

Faramarz Akbari, governor of the Iranian city of Ghasr-e Shirin, said that six people had died and scores more injured, according to the state-run IRNA news agency.

The quake's epicenter was located 32 kilometers north of the Iranian city of Sarpol-e Zahab and 100 kilometers southeast of Iraq's Sulaumaniyah at a depth of ten kilometers.

The state-controlled television said at least eight villages were damaged.

Iraq's Meteorological Organization issued a warning on state TV urging people to stay away from buildings and to avoid from using elevators, CNN reported.

Witnesses reported on social media that they felt the shocks as far as Baghdad and Mosul.
