US expected to name North Korea terror sponsor

In the first comments on Mr Trump's visit by a North Korean official, a Pyongyang foreign ministry spokesman said it was a "warmonger's visit for confrontation to rid" North Korea of its self-defensive nuclear deterrence, the state-run KCNA news agency reported.

He was then due to fly to China, where USA officials say he will press a reluctant President Xi Jinping to tighten the screws further on Pyongyang.

"Trump, during his visit, laid bare his true nature as destroyer of the world peace and stability and begged for a nuclear war on the Korean peninsula", the statement said.

It comes days after Trump left Seoul, where he offered a lengthy, detailed critique of North Korea's human rights abuses and nuclear ambitions.

When Donald Trump addressed South Korea's parliament earlier this week, The Associated Press noted his "striking shift in tone". "Every step you take down this dark path increases the peril you face". "Dead stop. The flourishing ends, and the prison state of North Korea sadly begins".

"Together we have in our power to finally liberate this region and the world from this very serious nuclear menace, but it will require collective action, collective strength and collective devotion to winning the peace", Trump said.

In its statement Saturday, the North Korean government renewed its description of Trump as a "dotard".

A spokeswoman for Germany's foreign ministry told a regular news conference that US foreign policy under Trump had become "unpredictable", including in areas like trade policy.

Tensions over North Korea's weapons programme have surged in recent months, as Pyongyang carried out a sixth nuclear test - by far its largest to date - and test fired dozens of missiles, some capable of reaching the USA mainland.

"The world can not tolerate the menace of a rogue regime that threatens it with nuclear devastation", Trump said.

During the 30-minute speech before the National Assembly on Wednesday, Trump called the North Korean leader, Kim Jong Un, a "tyrant", and contrasted the North's community with an economic "miracle" in South Korea.
