New ZR1 is the most powerful 'Vette yet

14 November 2017, 12:42 | Bernard Bryant

Here Is Your First Look at the 2019 Chevrolet Corvette ZR1

First Look: With the new 2019 Corvette ZR1, Chevy builds the best 'Vette yet

The rest seem to be mostly also rans in their respective category. Indeed, the 2017 Chevrolet Corvette Z06 included an engine with 650 horsepower. How does 755 horsepower and 715 pound-feet of torque strike you? This upgrade installed racing-grade suspension, braking, and cooling components, along with a heavy-duty 4-speed manual transmission.

Chevy is playing the 0-60 miles per hour and quarter mile numbers close to its chest right now.

Looking for a price? Pricing was not announced.

Versus the single-bumper opening on lesser Corvettes (even the Z06), the ZR1 gets three massive openings plus what appears to be a fourth one tucked above the road-hugging splitter.

"I've never driven a Corvette like this before, and nobody else has either, because there's never been one like this before", Mark Reuss, a General Motors executive vice president, resident vehicle guy, and unabashed Corvette enthusiast, said in a statement.

"Its unprecedented performance puts all other global supercars on notice that the ZR1 is back". Alternatively, you can specify the High Wing, which maximizes downforce and is optimized for going around corners at track speeds.

In addition to the larger supercharger, Chevrolet has also utilised a new dual-fuel injection system, combining direct and port injection to liberate those huge figures. It's the first time an automatic transmission has been offered in a ZR1.

Inside: details like a carbon fiber-trimmed steering wheel highlight the 2019 Corvette ZR1. The new ZR1 has four additional radiators to keep it from getting hot under the collar, giving it a total of 13. A new carbon fiber "halo" hood rises high and is open in the center in order to clear the bigger supercharger and intercooler. Chevrolet says the 6.2-liter LT5 supercharged engine is an exclusive to the ZR1, and there are some things familiar and some things new.

"As the highest-performing Corvette ever, the ZR1's design supports its capability in every way", says exterior design manager Kirk Bennion.

Compared to the Z06, the ZR1 also arrives with a raft of aerodynamic improvements, with buyers offered the choice of two aero packages: standard Low Wing and optional two-way-adjustable High Wing. Also present are chin spoilers on the front bumper, a prominent diffuser placed at the rear bumper and fender-mounted wings that Chevrolet claim will generate more downforce without creating drag.

A new Sebring Orange Design Package will make it virtually impossible to ignore the new Corvette ZR1.

On Sunday in Dubai, Chevy pulled the cover off the newest, baddest 'Vette: the ZR1.

Inside the cockpit, Chevrolet threw in its best mix of materials, including leather for the seats and suede microfiber inserts.

As standard the interior of the auto gets heated and cooled Nappa leather seats, a carbon fibre rimmed steering wheel and a Bose premium sound system.

The ZR1 will go on sale next spring as a 2019 model.
