Grace leads local charge in Nedbank Golf Challenge
Branden Grace secured a first victory of 2017 by grabbing a one-shot win on home soil at the Nedbank Golf Challenge in South Africa. "That's why I didn't make as many birdies as the day before".
"This is the one event that as a South African you want to win". That he ended up doing so comfortably spoke volumes for his performance.
Jamieson edged ahead of overnight leader Victor Dubuisson (71) and has a chance at just his second European Tour title. Dubuisson then bogeyed the next, leaving the other two to effectively fight it out over the closing three holes.
The South African, who shot a 75 in tough conditions on Friday, prevailed in a tight battle among the last group on the course, edging out Scott Jamieson by one stroke.
Grace and Schwartzel are well-placed for a title challenge.
He made five birdies in another steady round of golf which has left him in pole position to win "Africa's Major" on Sunday.
The 29-year-old also revealed that he found out on Wednesday he is having a baby boy.
AJ Green fined $42000 for brawl in Jacksonville
Green was docked for fighting and for unsportsmanlike conduct. "I accept my fine, I'll pay it, and move on", Green said. He also said he would have behaved differently during the fight had he known he was going to get ejected.
They all had a share of the lead with four holes to play, but a brilliant 40-foot birdie putt on the 16th moved Grace to 11 under and with a one-shot victory over Jamieson. "I think to be in with a chance of winning the Race to Dubai, it's pretty special", said the player from Southport.
"I've played brilliantly all year". Getting into Dubai was the goal coming here.
"Today I was playing, trying to get myself into some kind of contention for the tournament", he said.
Hao-Tong Li posted the lowest score of the week with an eight-under-par 64.
Tommy Fleetwood remains on top, with Justin Rose and Sergio Garcia the only men who can overtake him.
As it happens, Grace and Dubuisson (who set the pace early on Thursday) finished joint-third past year so have points to prove at the Gary Player CC. The Aberdonian had been bogey-free until then on the last day and wrote on Twitter: "Headless after that finish".
Drysdale also suffered a costly finish to his round in the company of Fleetwood. "He missed a 6'0" birdie try to tie the lead at 13, but joined it soon after with a two-putt par breaker at 14 and sneaked clear with a magnificent 35'0" birdie conversion at the par-3 16th, seconds after Jamieson lipped out for a chip-in red number of his own. "(It) just gets magnified towards the end of it".
