Report shows high levels of lead in certain fidget spinners
Target has pulled some fidget spinners from it's website and has begun taking them off shelves following a report published by the US Public Interest Group.
Two types of metal fidget spinners, called the Fidget Wild Premium Spinner Brass and the Fidget Wild Premium Spinner Metal, are sold at Target and were found to contain far beyond the legal amount of lead designated safe for products aimed at kids. The group said tests conducted showed the items contained between 520 parts per million and 33,000 ppm of lead. The metal spinner tested at 13 times acceptable lead levels.
"The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has reviewed and explicitly defined fidget spinners as 'general use products.' They are not defined by the CPSC as toys", Target spokesman Lee Henderson said in a prepared statement, according to CBS News. "As a result, the fidget spinners identified are not regulated as toys or children's products and are not required to meet children's product standards".
Target is coming under criticism this morning over some of the fidget spinners it sells.

"All fidget spinners have play value as children's toys regardless of age labeling", said Danny Katz, director of PIRG. Paint or surface coatings must not exceed 90 ppm.
There are no lead-level prohibitions for products marked for children 12 and over.
"Even small amounts of lead in toys can be ingested when transferred from fingers to mouth or from fingers to food", said national lead expert Dr. Helen Binns, pediatrician at Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children's Hospital of Chicago and professor of pediatrics at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine, in a written statement.
Children exposed to lead have an increased risk for damage to the brain and nervous system as well as slow growth and development, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
In the report, the lab results were tested twice to confirm the results. It's also calling on children and adults to stop using the toys.
