The government has been reassured by indications that some Eurosceptics are prepared to pay a little more as the price for ensuring Britain heads out of the exit door. If this border is not on the island of Ireland, then it must be in the Irish Sea, with some special arrangement reached for the North.
Back in London, Brexit Secretary David Davis was reassuring the City that banks were high up on his negotiating priority list and that May was making overtures to the pro-Brexit camp in her party.
Although there would need to be "specific solutions" for the unique position of Northern Ireland "this can not amount to creating a new border inside our United Kingdom".
It is understood that there are about 100 European Union rules and regulations, including many covering customs and agriculture, that Ireland wants maintained to ensure an open trade Border.
Prime Minister Theresa May and her team are battling to keep exit negotiations with the European Union moving, amid growing concern that talks have yet to begin on a transitional deal to smooth the exit for businesses or the complex terms of a future trade deal.
By deciding to no longer to seek membership of the single market and the customs union, Theresa May has already ruled out the softest versions of Brexit - such as the so-called Norway option which even some Leave supporters wanted. It would like the whole U.K.to remain in the customs union and single market, but failing that, wants to avoid on the island of Ireland "any regulatory divergence from the rules of the EU Internal Market and Customs Union". "A key priority remains to preserve the sovereignty of our courts", he said.
"But we need to see flexibility, imagination and willingness to make progress on both sides if these negotiations are to succeed", he added.
Mr Barnier said the latest round of talks had largely involved "deepening discussions, clarification and technical work".

Billie, the daughter of two veterans, was discovered 300 miles away from her job at a Virginia naval base where she was last seen. Attorney's office announced on Wednesday that they have arrested and charged a Navy veteran with the kidnapping of Ashanti.
Asked whether the European Union worries May's government might collapse, Barnier said "I am not going to comment on the internal political situation in the United Kingdom".
"We have consistently heard about the economic issues", he said.
A senior Government source said the British should not feel blindsided.
In mid-December, EU leaders must decide if sufficient progress has been made on a range of issues to allow the Brexit talks to progress.
The Democratic Unionist Party (DUP) meanwhile has repeatedly warned that it will not accept any deal that undermines the union between Britain and Northern Ireland.
May added that the inclusion "in black and white" of the dateBrexit will officially take place will ensure that the process can not be blocked.
"At the last round [of negotiations], agreement was reached in principle on joint principles on the Common Travel Area, which aim to recognise an existing bilateral arrangement between the United Kingdom and Ireland", the paper states.
On Monday, the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland James Brokenshire said in a speech in Brussels that it would be "impossible" for Northern Ireland to remain in the customs union and single market, while the rest of the United Kingdom remained outside.
